Deer Season in the Ouachitas: Best Trucks and Jeeps for Hunting Around Hot Springs

Deer Season in the Ouachitas: Best Trucks & Jeeps for Hunting Around Hot Springs

The Ouachita Mountains are some of the best deer country in Arkansas. Thick pine forests, rocky ridges, and quiet creek bottoms surround Hot Springs on every side. For many local families, deer season is a tradition that gets passed down from one generation to the next.

The 2026-27 season is already here. Archery season runs from September 26, 2026, to February 28, 2027. Muzzleloader (alternative firearms) season opens October 17, and modern gun season opens November 14 in the zones around the Ouachitas. Exact dates vary by zone, so check the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission before you go.

Getting to your stand is half the battle in these mountains. At Chris Crain Dodge Jeep Ram in Hot Springs, we want to help you get there safely. Here is what to look for in a hunting vehicle, and which 2027 models we think best fit Ouachita hunters.

What Ouachita Deer Hunters Need in a Vehicle

Hunting in the mountains is different from hunting in the flatlands. Forest roads are steep, rocky, and full of loose gravel. A quick rain can turn a dirt road into a slick mess. Here is what your hunting rig should have:

  • Four-wheel drive with low range. Low gearing gives you control on steep climbs and slow descents.

  • Ground clearance. Rocks and deep ruts can damage the underside of a low vehicle.

  • A place to haul your deer. A truck bed makes it easy to bring home a buck without making a mess inside the truck.

  • Towing power. Many hunters pull an ATV or side-by-side to reach remote stands.

  • Good tires. All-terrain tires grip better on rocks and mud.

Keeping your vehicle in top shape is just as important as picking the right one. Our guide on how often you should service your Dodge, Jeep, or Ram explains what to check and when.

2027 Ram 1500: Comfort on the Highway, Grit in the Woods

The 2027 Ram 1500 is a top choice for hunters who drive to the woods and back every weekend. It rides smoothly on Highway 7, then handles forest roads with ease.

The 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo engine gives you strong power for climbing hills. When properly equipped, it can tow up to about 11,530 pounds. That is plenty for an ATV trailer, a side-by-side, or a camper for deer camp.

New features for 2027 make hunting trips even easier:

  • Available 360-degree camera on more trims, including Laramie and Rebel. It helps you spot stumps and rocks when backing into a tight spot.

  • Available 2 kW onboard power with two 120V outlets in the bed on Pentastar V6 models. Charge batteries, run lights, or power tools at camp.

  • Popular Equipment Group with a 14.5-inch touchscreen and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

2027 Ram 2500: The Deer Camp Workhorse

If you run a deer camp, haul a big side-by-side, or pull a travel trailer into the mountains, the 2027 Ram 2500 is ready for the job.

The 6.4L HEMI V8 makes 410 horsepower. The available 6.7L Cummins High-Output turbo diesel makes 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. That torque makes long, steep grades feel easy, even with a heavy load behind you.

Here is what's new for 2027:

  • The Payload Upgrade Package on most HEMI models boosts payload capacity to up to 4,580 pounds.

  • Power Wagon with a Cummins diesel for the first time. It has locking front and rear differentials, 34-inch tires, and a 31-gallon tank good for about 600 miles. That means fewer trips to the gas station during a long hunting weekend.

  • Standalone Warn winch available on HEMI Rebel and Power Wagon models. A winch can pull you or a buddy out of a muddy ditch or help drag a fallen tree off the trail.

2027 Jeep Wrangler: Made for Mountain Trails

The Ouachitas are full of old logging roads and rocky trails. Few vehicles handle them better than the 2027 Jeep Wrangler. Every Wrangler comes with four-wheel drive, and its short size lets it squeeze down narrow paths where a full-size truck won't fit.

The Rubicon is the trail king. It has front and rear locking differentials and a disconnecting front sway bar. Those features keep the tires gripping when the trail gets rough. If you want more power, the Willys 392 and Moab 392 use a 6.4L HEMI V8 with 470 horsepower.

For 2027, Jeep added features that help on cold mornings:

  • Sahara now has heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring, and an off-road camera.

  • Rubicon adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and navigation.

  • Sport, Sport S, and Willys get proximity keyless entry so that you can unlock the doors with gloves on.

The Wrangler can tow up to 3,500 pounds on select trims, which is enough for a small ATV trailer. Browse our Jeep Wrangler inventory, and learn how Uconnect keeps you connected on back roads.

2026 Jeep Gladiator: Trail Skills Plus a Truck Bed

The 2026 Jeep Gladiator is the perfect mix for deer hunters. It has the off-road skills of a Wrangler, plus a five-foot pickup bed for your deer, stand, and gear.

The Gladiator uses a 3.6L Pentastar V6 with 285 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 7,700 pounds and carry up to 1,720 pounds of payload. It has up to 11.6 inches of ground clearance and can cross water up to 31.5 inches deep, so rocky trails and swollen creeks are less of a worry.

The Gladiator comes in Sport, Sport S, Willys, Mojave, and Rubicon trims. The Rubicon offers a crawl ratio of up to 77:1, which gives you slow, steady control on steep, rocky climbs. New for 2026, an improved door hinge design makes it quicker to pull the doors off for warm early-season hunts. Sport S buyers can also add aggressive all-terrain tires for better grip on gravel and mud.

Get Your Truck or Jeep Ready for Opening Day

A breakdown on a remote forest road is no fun. A little prep before modern gun season can save your hunt.

  1. Check your tires. Look at tread depth and air pressure. Cold weather lowers tire pressure.

  2. Test your battery. Frosty mornings are hard on old batteries.

  3. Inspect your brakes. Steep mountain roads put extra strain on them.

  4. Change your oil and top off fluids. Towing and hill climbing make your engine work harder.

  5. Add the right gear. Bed liners, tie-downs, and hitch accessories make hauling a deer or ATV easier.

You can find bed liners, hitches, and more at our Mopar parts and accessories department. When you're ready for a checkup, schedule service online.

The 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Is Getting Some Big Upgrades

Hot Springs drivers know the Jeep Grand Cherokee well. It has been a top pick for families and outdoor lovers for years. Now Jeep is making real changes for the 2027 model year. The Trailhawk trim is back. Overland is a new trim. The screens are bigger. And the whole trim lineup is growing. Our team at Chris Crain Dodge Jeep Ram in Hot Springs looked through what Jeep has announced so far, straight from the manufacturer. A Bigger Trim Lineup The 2027 Grand Cherokee lineup now includes nine trims: Laredo, Laredo X, Upland, Trailhawk, Overland, Limited, Limited Reserve, Summit, and Summit Obsidian. Laredo and Laredo X sit at the start of the lineup, and both are getting a nice upgrade: a new 10.1-inch touchscreen. Jeep hasn't shared 2027 prices yet. Pricing will depend on the trim and the dealer. Check our new vehicle inventory page or give us a call for current pricing as it comes in. Trailhawk Returns, Overland Joins the Lineup The Trailhawk trim is back. Jeep calls it the return of "a Trail Rated favorite." Overland is brand new for 2027. It mixes upscale comfort with real trail-ready gear. Both trims come with serious off-road parts. Trailhawk carries the Trail Rated badge. Jeep only gives this badge to vehicles that pass its own tests in five areas: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation, and water fording. Every trim except Laredo and Laredo X comes standard with the 2.0-liter Hurricane 4 Turbo engine. It's paired with a new Gen IV automatic transmission. This engine makes 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. It gets an estimated 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Laredo and Laredo X use a different engine, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. It makes 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Overland adds a bold front end with bright tow hooks, air suspension, a 2-speed transfer case, black cladding, and 21-inch wheels. Trailhawk and Overland both get the Quadra-Lift Air Suspension System, which Jeep calls class-exclusive. Summit gets it too. This system lowers the vehicle at highway speeds to help with aerodynamics. It raises the vehicle back up on the trail to help clear obstacles. Jeep also offers three 4x,4 systems across the lineup: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. A Selec-Terrain system lets drivers pick from five modes: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Mud/Sand. Jeep says the 2027 Grand Cherokee can tow up to 6,200 pounds with either engine. Jeep calls this best-in-class. That number matters if you're hauling a boat to Lake Ouachita or pulling a camper into the mountains. Bigger Screens, Smarter Tech Jeep is putting a real focus on tech for 2027. Along with the new 10.1-inch screen on Laredo and Laredo X, higher trims can get a 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 NAV touchscreen. It comes with built-in navigation, a SiriusXM trial, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Jeep also offers a 10-inch head-up display and a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. Families will like the extra features in the back seat. The rear-seat entertainment screens come with Amazon Fire TV built in, and each screen works on its own. On the Grand Cherokee L (3-row), an available FamCam lets people in the front seat check on kids, pets, or gear in the back. For sound, Jeep offers a McIntosh preamplifier system. McIntosh is a well-known luxury home audio brand. The front-seat occupants get 950 watts through 19 speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer. Jeep says it has the most available speakers in its class. Safety tech is getting an update too. Hands-Free Active Driving Assist lets drivers take their hands off the wheel in certain conditions, while the system keeps watching to make sure the driver stays alert. A Drowsy Driver Detection system monitors signs that a driver is becoming tired. The UnderPark Assist system continuously finds open parking spaces and monitors them. A 360 camera gives you a full view around the vehicle. A wireless charging pad is also available. Design Details The 2027 Grand Cherokee comes standard with bright LED headlights. It also gets silver silk accents, gloss black mirror accents, and available bold paint colors for a fresh look. An available Hands-Free Power Liftgate lets you open the trunk just by moving your foot under the back bumper. It's standard on Overland and Summit, and available on Trailhawk. Wheel styles change by trim. Trailhawk comes with 18-inch Mid-Gloss Crystal wheels. Limited Reserve comes with 20-inch Black Noise Painted wheels. Overland, Summit, and Summit Obsidian all ride on 21-inch wheels, with Summit Obsidian in a gloss black finish. Jeep's color choices for 2027 cover a lot of ground, from bold colors like Red Hot to cooler tones like High Tide, plus classic black, white, silver, and gray. Two Row Choices for Every Family The Grand Cherokee still comes in two sizes. The two-row model seats up to 5 people. It has up to 70.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the second-row seats folded down, or 37.7 cubic feet with all seats up. The Grand Cherokee L (3-row) seats up to 7 people, or 6 people if you choose the available second-row bucket seats. It offers up to 84.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the second- and third-row seats folded down, or 17.2 cubic feet with all seats up. It also offers a power-folding third-row seat. That gives Hot Springs families a real choice: a smaller SUV for daily driving, or a bigger one for road trips, sports practice, and hauling gear. Why This Matters for Hot Springs Drivers Hot Springs sits close to the Ouachita National Forest and several lakes. That means towing and off-road ability aren't just nice extras here. They matter. The Trailhawk gives drivers a real Trail Rated option again. The new Overland trim offers families comfort without sacrificing capability. And with a larger standard touchscreen now on the Laredo and Laredo X, even the base trim is getting a real upgrade. See what the 2027 Grand Cherokee has to offer at Chris Crain Dodge Jeep Ram in Hot Springs, AR!
